Reading
Early reading is taught primarily through daily, 20 minute systematic synthetic phonics sessions, which teaches children the connections between letters and sounds, and how to read by 'decoding' and 'synthesising' sounds to make words.
We use the 'Letters and Sounds'programme to support our phonics teaching.
We provide a rich literary environment, and many opportunities for these skills to be practices throughout the school day. These sessions take place in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. We continually assess the children, and provide additional support when necessary. In Year 1, the children's ability to read by 'sounding out' is tested by a Government Phonics Screening test. Those children who fall below the national standard receive phonics intervention, and are then re-tested in Y2.
We are passionate about developing a 'love of reading' and as such provide a range of books of an appropriate level of difficulty, for each year group. Early reading books are matched with pupils' phonic knowledge.
Older and more able readers are no longer learning to read, but reading to learn. We give every opportunity for children to practice and develop their skills through regularly reading to adults, shared reading sessions, as well as daily 'reciprocal reading'. We ask that our parents encourage their children to read a variety of books at home.
