Partnership working to build excellence in PE
At the Rawcliffe Federation of Schools we have a longstanding and successful collaboration with Hull FC as part of their Partner Schools Sports programme as well as working with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and other local sports providers. These programmes aim to enhance and develop the sports knowledge and skills of children in schools. The specialist coaches plan and then work alongside staff to deliver high quality PE lessons. The learning begins right from our youngest children in the Early Years, where they start to understand, experience and develop the building blocks of the fundamentals of movement, team work and sporting values. As the children move through school and until they leave at the end of Year 6, they learn and take part in a range of activities, games and experiences that further build on these foundations. As a result of this partnership coaching model, and the professional development package that sits alongside this, our staff are confident practitioners, positive role models and teachers of PE.
The partnership with Hull F.C. extends beyond the curriculum, and offers our children exciting experiences and opportunities in the wider world of sport.
- Magic Moments. Children (and families), are invited to the Hull FC MKM stadium to become part of the live fixture! They get to take part in the prematch flag waving ceremony and are very much involved in the whole event from start to finish.
- Black & White Sports Day. An annual event in the Federation Sporting calendar! A team of specialist Hull FC coaches take over the schools and get all the children involved and to experience a variety of different rugby activities. We have even had Hull FC players as part of this day - sharing their experiences, offering sporting advice and being an inspiration to the children.
- Access all Areas - this is an opportunity for our children to visit the training facility, watch and then meet the players in their pre-match training session.
Active Participation in Competition and Events
We are also part of the East Riding School Sport Partnership (SSP West), where we get the opportunity to build a programme of sporting events, competitions and fixtures that our children can get involved in. This is a strong network of schools across our wider locality, with which our children can interact and access inclusive, varied and high-quality PE and School Sport experiences.
To date, this year, we have been involved with events in:
Cross Country , Table Tennis, Girls and Boys Football, Dodgeball and Bench ball.....
Show your Sporting Values
Here at the Rawcliffe Federation of Schools, we promote and build our competency in the core sporting values of:
- Teamwork
- Respect
- Honesty
- Inspiration
- Passion
- Equality
- Courage
During our PE lessons, in our extra-curricular sporting events and in our conduct and choices each and every day, we spot and celebrate children that are demonstrating these values. We then like to recognise these in our Celebration Assemblies - to share and congratulate the children on showing these essential attributes and character traits.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activity
Each alternate year, our children in Years 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to go on a residential trip. Here they are given the opportunity to participate both individually and in teams in outdoor and adventurous activities.
Swimming
At the Rawcliffe Federation of Schools, children are taught swimming primarily in Year 3. Here children are taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
There are opportunities to complete this course again in future years if children do not meet the standard.
Young Leaders
We are extremely lucky at the Rawcliffe Federation of Schools to have a team of responsible Play Leaders to help with many active aspects of school life. Being a Play Leaders is just one way that the children in our schools show respect, teamwork and responsibility for themselves and each other. They take their roles and responsibility very seriously - including sorting out our sporting equipment and playtime equipment, being in charge of showing the children how to appropriately use this equipment and tidying it away again, as well as setting up and leading small group games during break times.
Mental Health Champions
Our KS2 children have become Mental Health Champions by taking part in One Goal, a Mental Health scheme to empower children and young people to be more healthy, happy and inspired. This scheme helps our children to know the essential knowledge and skills they need to support their own and their peers’ mental health. This training is empowering our children to take a more proactive approach to managing their own mental health, freeing up their time and energy to focus on what really matters and makes them happy.
