Writing
Curriculum Statement
Our values underpin our curriculum. We provide a curriculum which promotes tolerance and celebration of difference. Our pupils are entitled to a balanced and broad curriculum which inspires. We engage our children through opportunities to: discover talents; explore the world around them; and support and learn from one another. At the heart of our schools, lies a dynamic, knowledge-rich curriculum that provides children with all the necessary skills and attributes needed to be successful learners and enabling them to leave primary education as well-rounded, confident individuals prepared for the modern world.
Statement of Intent
At the Federation of Rawcliffe Bridge and Rawcliffe Primary School, we strive to teach an English curriculum which inspires our children, nurturing the very best in each individual whilst endeavoring to ensure that children develop a lifelong, healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards writing.
We teach children to understand the power of language and encourage them to engage with the wider world around them. Rawcliffe Bridge and Rawcliffe Primary Schools believe that spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary are integral aspects in the teaching of every subject. They are fundamental to the overall development of each child and English is at the heart of teaching and learning in every area of the curriculum. Our goal is for all children to be able to express themselves creatively and imaginatively through a love of reading and writing.
Supported by our phonics and reading curriculum, we want every child to foster a love of language and have the ability to express themselves appropriately. This requires having the motor skills, stamina, and imagination to become effective communicators.
Our aims are:
- To provide children with a clear, effective and progressive writing journey to enable them to become competent and confident writers.
- To ensure children have the grammar skills to use a range of age-appropriate grammar features in their writing.
- To enable the children to build upon their phonics skills to spell words accurately in their writing.
- To ensure children have access to a language rich environment to provide them with a bank of language to use in their writing.
- To give children the confidence to write in a variety of different styles and to equip them with the skills needed to transfer appropriate writing skills.
- To ensure children know how to plan, practise and evaluate their writing as well as carry out an effective edit and improve process.
- To provide children with a balanced and broad curriculum, which encompasses writing practice, including handwriting, spelling, widening vocabulary, and writing for different styles, purposes, and audiences, as well as focussing on spoken English, reading, grammar and pronunciation.
